The World AIDS Day State House Awareness Event will be held on Monday, December 1, in the State Room of the Rhode Island State House. This event is being sponsored by the Rhode Island HIV Prevention Coalition to honor World AIDS Day.

Light refreshments will be served from 12-12:30pm, immediately  followed by a series of speakers.  Speakers include Governor Lincoln Chafee, Representative Christopher Blazejewski, Dr. Amy Nunn, Josh Kilby and Brandon Fernandes. Panels from The AIDS Memorial Quilts will be on display.

Dr. Amy Nunn is an Assistant Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the Brown University School of Public Health. She is also the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Public Health Institute (RIPHI), which is dedicated to reducing health disparities in Rhode Island and beyond. Josh Kilby is a healthcare worker and queer activist living in Providence. He has recently gone on PrEP (pre exposure prophylaxis).  Brandon Fernandes has worked for various nonprofit organizations teaching safer sex and HIV prevention to youth and adults in the LGBT community.

As of 2012, 1,591 Rhode Islanders have died due to this epidemic. Although  rates of infection have decreased over the last 30 years, 74 new cases of HIV  were documented in 2013.
